چکیده

An empirical approach is presented for the estimation of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) and air–sea CO2 fluxes in the northern South China Sea in summer using satellite-derived sea surface temperatures (SSTs), chlorophyll-a (Chl a) concentrations, and wind fields. Two algorithms were tested. The first used an SST-dependent equation, and the other involved the introduction of Chl a. Regression equations were developed for summer based on in situ data obtained in July, 2004. Using the monthly average SST and Chl a fields derived from the advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) and the SeaWiFS (sea-viewing wide field of view sensor), respectively, the monthly pCO2 fields were computed. The derived pCO2 was compared with the shipboard pCO2 observations conducted in July, 2000. This resulted in a root-mean-square error of 4.6 latm, suggesting that the satellite-derived pCO2 was in general agreement with the in situ observations. The air–sea CO2 flux was further computed with the aid of the monthly mean QuikSCAT wind speed. We contend that more shipboard data are necessary for refining the empirical algorithms and reducing the uncertainty in the results. 2009 National Natural Science Foundation of China and Chinese Academy of Sciences. Monthly variability in surface pCO2 and net air-sea CO2 flux in the Arabian Sea

[1] Recent studies on biogeochemical cycling of carbon in the Arabian Sea, by Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS), revealed that the Arabian Sea is a perennial source of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The surface pCO2 is governed by physical processes such as water mass transports, upwelling and winter convective mixing, and associated biological processes. Hence surface pCO2 distribution ...

Remotely Sensed Study of Air-sea CO2 Fluxes Variability in the Northern South China Sea

The CO 2 source or sink status and variability in the coastal ocean are the subjects of highly debate. Satellite remote sensing offers an avenue for expanding observations and analyzing temporal and spatial variability of the environment of the ocean. In the present study, the algorithm for surface layer seawater partial pressure of CO 2 (pCO 2sw) of the northern South China Sea (NSCS) was appl...

Carbon dioxide variability and air‐sea fluxes in the northern Adriatic Sea

[1] High‐frequency measurements of surface water partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in the Gulf of Trieste in the north Adriatic Sea, the most northern part of the Mediterranean, are presented. Sea surface pCO2 was measured at the coastal oceanographic buoy Vida (45° 32′ 55.68′′ N, 13° 33′ 1.89′′ E), using the Submersible Autonomous Moored Instrument for CO2 during four deployments from 2007 to 200...

Drake Passage Oceanic pCO2: Evaluating CMIP5 Coupled Carbon–Climate Models Using in situ Observations

Surface water partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) variations in Drake Passage are examined using decade-long underway shipboardmeasurements. North of the Polar Front (PF), the observed pCO2 shows a seasonal cycle that peaks annually in August and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC)–forced variations are significant. Just south of the PF, pCO2 shows a small seasonal cycle that peaks annually in February...

Annual sea-air CO2 fluxes in the Bering Sea: Insights from new autumn and winter observations of a seasonally ice-covered continental shelf

High-resolution data collected from several programs have greatly increased the spatiotemporal resolution of pCO2(sw) data in the Bering Sea, and provided the first autumn and winter observations. Using data from 2008 to 2012, monthly climatologies of sea-air CO2 fluxes for the Bering Sea shelf area from April to December were calculated, and contributions of physical and biological processes t...
